Cacao 101

What is ceremonial grade cacao?

Ceremonial grade cacao is a minimally processed form of chocolate, used traditionally in Central and South America as a heart-opening, grounding drink.

Unlike commercial chocolate, cacao in its purest form is a whole food — rich in minerals, naturally bitter, and traditionally used in ritual and daily grounding practices.

What is cacao (and why it feels different)?

Cacao comes from the Theobroma cacao tree — a name that’s often translated as “food of the gods.”

For thousands of years in Mesoamerica, cacao was valued as a special drink and part of cultural traditions and ceremonies.
Today, many people choose cacao because it supports a different pace: slower, steadier, more embodied.

Cacao isn’t hot chocolate. It’s chocolate before it became a dessert.

It begins with the cacao bean — fermented, dried, and gently transformed into a fine powder you can whisk into a simple, honest cup. [1]

No complicated equipment. No performance. Just warmth, flavour, and a moment to come back to yourself.

Because cacao carries something coffee rarely does: a softer kind of lift. Cacao naturally contains theobromine (and a small amount of caffeine), which many people experience as steadier and more grounded than the sharp “hit” of coffee. [2] [3] It’s also naturally rich in minerals such as magnesium and iron (levels vary by origin and processing). [4]

And there’s history in it, too.

For thousands of years, cacao was prepared as a drink across Mesoamerica—valued not only for taste, but for its role in ritual and community. [5] [6] That’s why cacao still feels different: it invites slowness. Presence. Connection.

At Season & Spice Rituals, we keep cacao simple and low‑intervention:
clean cacao powder, thoughtfully sourced, and crafted into blends you can actually live with—every day.

This isn’t an escape.

It’s a return:
to the body, to the breath, and to what’s true.

Cacao vs chocolate

Although they come from the same plant, cacao and chocolate are very different in processing and purpose.

  • Cacao is minimally processed and retains natural nutrients
  • Chocolate is often heavily processed and combined with sugar, dairy, and additives
  • Ceremonial grade cacao is used for ritual, focus, and grounding
  • Commercial chocolate is usually designed for taste and pleasure rather than function

How cacao feels

Cacao is not a stimulant like coffee, and it does not create a crash.

Instead, it is often described as steady, warm, and heart-centred — supporting presence rather than urgency.
